Week 1: TED Talks Summary - Tim Brown: Tales of creativity and play

Tim Brown talked about how adults and children differ in terms of creativity. While children are boundless and eagerly share their ideas, adults fear judgement, are conservative about their thinking and feel embarrassment when displaying their work.

However, children tend to lose creativity as their sensitivity of other's opinions increases as they age. Creating secure environments prevents this as it cultivates trust and confidence to take risk and explore ideas.

He also discussed different types of play for creativity.

1. Exploratory Play

- Go for quantity
- When discovering something new, one would ask "What is it?", exploratory play occurs when one asks "What can I do with it?"
-> begin to create numerous ideas in self-exploration

2. Playful Building

- Construction play
- Thinking with our hands
   -> learn by doing
eg. Industries make prototypes
- Gives a visual for creativity in designing

3. Role play

- Acting it out
- For designing non-physical ideas
eg. services, softwares
- Projects oneself into an experience one is designing for
- To empathise with consumers
- Follow social scripts and rules
->co-negotiation leads to productive play, which leads to interesting ideas

He also mentioned that being pragmatic can lead to great ideas. One can be playful whilst in self-exploration and professional in discussions and communication of ideas with others.
