Week 2 : TED Talks Summary - Julie Burstein: 4 Lessons in Creatity

Julie Burstein used Raku pottery as a metaphor for the process of creativity. Every attempt in creating a piece would be different and might even surprise you. Furthermore, you learn choose to between controlling and letting go in the process.

She also highlighted the four important aspects of life which are essential for creativity to flourish that we should embrace

1. Embracing Experiences:

   - Creativity is best learnt through typical, daily experiences and stories.
   - Be attentive to the world around you with eagerness and understanding.
   - Be open to new experience, which might even change or impact your life.

2. Embrace Challenges

   - According to numerous artists, most influential work derive from and are inspired by tough parts of their life.
   - Instead of putting ourselves down over our disability, we should embrace it. It may even create something original and innovative.

3. Embrace Limitations

   - Pushing up against your limits can lead you to discover your own individuality.
   - Doing something you cannot do would lead you to find your own voice

4. Embrace Loss

    - Loss is constant in human experiences and there is an inevitable tragic gap that needs to occur.
    - One has to look at loss in a direct and honest way so that they can see it in a different light and capture creativity from it.
    - "To hold tension like a violin string and make something beautiful"

After watching this video, I have realised that everything that happens to us in our lives evolves us to be a more creative person with our own individuality. We should also be more aware of our surroundings, setbacks and ourselves and reflect on our experiences to better ourselves and further improve our work. Moreover, we all live in the cycle of creation and destruction, through destruction and failure, we can learn from it and create something beautiful from it.
